Crepe became popular in the UK during the 1950's as an alternative to leather or harder material-soled footwear. Popularized by the "Teddy Boys" with their fingertip jackets and drainpipe trousers, crepe made its way into American footwear by the early 1960's due to its slip-resistance and shock absorbance.
